Originally a primary school for the Mount William Estate, Elizabeth’s Wing is where the local children attained their early education up until the mid-20th century. Since then, it was converted to a visitor’s wing and then renovated to its current state as a self-contained granny flat, which housed widow Elizabeth Barr Smith in her final years.
Elizabeth’s Wing has come along way before becoming a guest suite. Originally the maids quarters, and then a school for the children of the estate, this section of the Homestead has lived many lives. The picture below shows R.M. and Dick Barr Smith with their tutor, Mr. Walker, who would’ve taught the boys in the school in Elizabeth’s Wing at the time.
Despite being located in Elizabeth’s Wing, the bookshelf embossed “EBS” actually belonged to Eda Barr Smith, her mother. Eda was an avid reader and a woman of many talents. When the original Homestead was destroyed in a fire in 1920, it was Eda who engaged designers for the new building and garden, including the iconic arches we see today.
You will also find her handmade tapestries throughout the Homestead. They can be found on the coffee table in Elizabeth’s Wing and above the fireplace in the Green Room.

Mount William revives the spirit, energises the soul through the surrounding nature, and nourishes the body with local, natural produce. Since 1842, it has welcomed family and friends to escape the city to reset, and in this next chapter, is now open for all to enjoy.
